In the summer of 1996, Trey Parker, Matt Stone and I spent three months in a dark room the size of a closet in Denver, Colorado. We shot hundreds of little construction paper cutouts frame by frame under a camera stand. The room was so small we had to take turns animating and any sneeze, bump or fart would disturb the carefully placed cutouts and keep us there for hours. "Cartman Gets An Anal Probe" is the only episode of South Park filmed in this traditional animation style, it was the episode that would set up the style of the entire show.
Early in 1997, Comedy Central ordered 13 episodes of South Park. "Anal Probe," which was to be the first show to air, was about 28 minutes in length... too long to air. We had to cut about 10 minutes out of the show and then had to add back three minutes of computer animation to tie the storyline together. When you watch the version of "Anal Probe" that debuted on August 13, 1997, you don't have to look very hard to figure out what parts are construction paper and what parts are computer animation.
Enclosed is the original 28 minute version of "Cartman Gets An Anal Probe," which has never aired. Using computers and almost 10 times the number of animators, it now takes a week to do what it took Matt, Trey and I three months to complete. That's a lot of leftover time for making sweet love down by the fire. So sit back, grab a plate of powdered donut pancake surprise and enjoy!
